Queer Warrior: Desire Marea

@desiremarea, Multi-disciplinary Artist

South African multi-disciplinary artist Desire Marea is poetry in motion, in artistry, in imagination. Fondly known as half of queer performance collective FAKA, Marea recently debuted their solo offering, Desire, cementing the impact they’ve made in SA’s local artscape.

They have, undeniably, altered the future of Black queer art. “Seeing society evolve (in real time) as a result of what you and other queer people have contributed is something special,” Marea shared with us.

They are confident that queerness is an infinite evolution, from those who fought, those who didn’t, those who surrendered in good faith, those who led and those who followed.

A creative healer, Marea’s work and words weave an intimacy that is indescribable; listening to their music, watching them perform and being a witness to their legacy of work feels like spiritual connection.

“You’re brilliant. You’re excellent. Greatness lives inside you. You are it. Believe it. The voice that tells you this, live from it. Don’t deny it or silence it. You deserve to experience your highest self.”

A mantra from Marea for younger queer people looking to exist openly, constantly choosing themselves. “Every manifestation of queerness is laced with a warrior spirit.”
