LGBT Network – Namibia was launched on 24 April near Swakopmund. After the Independence of Namibia, the Prime Minister announced the protection of Gay and Lesbian individuals under the law. The Namibian Constitution in several instances guarantees this protection and allows homosexual Namibians to function in the Namibian society and carry out their rights and duties as citizens of this Sovereign State.
Article 5 of the Namibian Constitution deals with the Protection of Fundamental Rights and Freedoms, Article 7 deals with the Protection of Liberty;
Article 10 deals with Equality and Freedom from Discrimination, Article 13 deals with the issue of Privacy and Article 21 with Freedom of
Association.
Based on the Namibian Constitution, laws like the labour law protect homosexual Namibians against evils such as discrimination and victimization, and homosexuality is not a crime, neither statutory nor by common law.
As a future platform to represent homosexual people in the Namibian society, LGBT salutes the efforts made so far by the Rainbow Project and Sister Namibia. LGBT plans to make a difference in the country by uniting homosexual Namibians under the auspices of the organisation and we will work closely with organisations such as the Rainbow Project and Sister Namibia to ensure that Namibia continues to foster an environment where gay and lesbian Namibians can live a full and productive life and do their share towards Namibian society.
The lesbian and gay community is taking a step forward and will launch the 'LGBT Network Namibia', to create a platform for Namibians with a homosexual
orientation to come together and unite with a common goal of Equality For All. LGBT Network - Namibia, stands for the proposition that all people are
created equal and worthy of the same rights to freedom, liberty, and equality.
In exercising their strength as a marginalised community, LGBT Network - Namibia's mission is to advocate equal rights for all LGBT Namibians with
equality for all citizens.
LGBT Network Namibia will seek to demonstrate that LGBT Namibians can, in a spirit of solidarity, and integrity, contribute substantially to building
and sustaining a wider Namibian Network.
