Little Poof is a lot more than one faery on a stage. There is Bruce J Little singing, strutting and vamping on stage with pianist, Cath, and he portrays multiple characters.
Of course there's drag – notably a pitiable, if perceptive, fag hag, numerous memorable lines - “sticks and stones may break my bones, but leather straps excite me”, and something for the lesbians.
Shanaaz is like so many hairdressers from the Cape Flats. An aggro moffie with attitude, acting “so fairies like me can mince in piece. Ken djy vi my?”
Bruce says Little Poof aims to bring moffies into the mainstream, and the show is SOLD OUT at Zietsies (4 Beverly Rd, Brixton 0827744902) till the end of February, but this quirky take on queer life by characters as diverse as the Congolese carguard and the “straight” oke in the diary room is sure to resurface elsewhere. Bruce has applied to take it to the Grahamstown Festival, and would love to get it back to where he hales from, Cape Town. It works well in a smallish setting like Zietsies, “If we got any more intimate, we'd have to use protection.”
